Digital vaccination certificates are valid for 270 days (9 months), to travel to all countries of the European Union. A measure in force since February 1, 2022 which aims to harmonize the rules at European level.
On December 21, 2021, the European Commission took new measures to harmonize the validity of vaccination certificates of the health pass in Europe. The period of validity of the latter to cross borders is changing.
A 9-month acceptance period
The validity period of the vaccination certificate of the European health pass has increased to 270 days (9 months). All EU countries are obliged to accept these documents 9 months after a primary vaccination with one or two doses, depending on the vaccines. On the other hand, national sovereignty takes precedence and the states can, if they wish, reduce the period of validity of the latter. This is particularly the case in France where, from February 15, the period of validity is reduced to 4 months instead of 9.
Commission calls for alignment at national level
In a press release, the Commission calls on States to “align themselves with these new rules”, with the aim of “providing security for travelers and limiting disruption”.
“A harmonized validity period for the digital EU COVID certificate is a necessity to facilitate safe free movement and coordination at EU level. The strength and success of this invaluable tool for citizens and businesses requires its consistent use across the EU,” said Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety.
