news culture DNA, Crunchyroll, Netflix: anime not to be missed in June 2022
While waiting for the summer 2022 anime, Netflix offers to (re)discover two rather old works in June. Both born in the late 80s, Spriggan and Bastard!! offer themselves a new adaptation from the streaming giant, always more invested in Japanese animation.
The new anime of June 2022
Spriggan gets a makeover. Pre-published in Japan between 1989 and 1996, this shōnen manga (compiled in eleven volumes) has already been released as a film by Studio 4°C in 1998, but also as a video game with Spriggan: Lunar Verse, a PlayStation title developed by From Liquid Mirror Software and edited by FromSoftware. This time, it is Netflix which offers us an animated series with the collaboration of the animation studio David Production (Jojo’s Bizarre, Adventure, Fire Force, Les Brigades Immunitaires…). This sci-fi adventure takes place at the end of the Cold War. The armies of the great nations compete to get their hands on artifacts of an ancient extraterrestrial civilization, whose knowledge and scientific prowess far exceeded that of humanity, but which quickly went to extinction due to misuse of these powerful tools. An organization, made up of elite agents called Spriggans, is on a mission to prevent these ancient technologies from falling into the wrong hands. We follow the journey of one of its members, agent Yu Ominae.
It will be available on Netflix from June 18. The number of episodes in the program has not yet been announced. Hiroshi Kobayashi (Rage of Bahamut Genesis, Kill la Kill) is directing this project. Hiroshi Seko (Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, Jujutsu Kaisen) is supervising and writing the script, while Shûhei Handa (Little Witch Academia) is responsible for character design.
Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy
Thirty years after a first adaptation in OAV of six episodes, the Bastard manga!! offers a new animated series of 24 episodes at Netflix. The first thirteen will be released simultaneously on the streaming platform on June 30, and the remaining episodes will arrive later in 2022. Liden Films studio (Tokyo Revengers, Tribe Nine, Terra Formars…) is overseeing this new adaptation, baptized Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy, with Takaharu Ozaki (Goblin Slayer) directing.
A work of heroic fantasy full of humor, fighting, magic and sex, Bastard takes place 400 years after the fall of modern civilization, in a world that has become medieval again where war is raging. The Army of Darkness assaults the Kingdom of Metalicana in an attempt to awaken the God of Destruction Anthrasax. To protect her people, the daughter of a high priest decides to resurrect Dark Schneider, a powerful wizard who once tried to take over the world, and whose soul is sealed in the body of his childhood friend Lucié Lenlen. Note that the manga, launched in 1988 by Kazushi Hagiwara in the pages of Ultra Jump magazine, is still not finished. Accustomed to long breaks, it currently has 27 volumes, available in France from Glénat editions.
