news culture Thor 4 Love and Thunder: The shortest MCU film since Ant-Man and the Wasp?

It’s in a little less than a month that Thor: Love & Thunder will be screened in cinemas. An expected film, especially since we should find the humorous paste of Taika Waititi, back after Thor: Ragnarok. As usual, we are promised a great show, but how long will the screening last?

Less than two hours for Thor: Love & Thunder?

Chris Hemsworth will be back as Thor, but the main interest of the public is to know how will the character of Natalie Portmann evolve, who recovers Mjöllnir and who therefore becomes Mighty Thor. In a mode where Thor tries to “find himself”, Jane Foster will have a hard time as Gorr, the Butcher of the Gods (Christian Bale), threatens the world. She will obviously not remain alone, since Thor is ready to come out of his introspection to save the world. He will also be accompanied Guardians of the Galaxywhich announces a good dose of burlesque scenes and epic moments.

We are used to it now, MCU movies are well over 90 minutesand he is rare that it no longer exceeds two hours. However, it seems that Thor: Love & Thunder that is the first film to fall below this mark since Ant-Man and The Wasp in 2018. So, we grant you, we are not far from it since the American cinema chain AMC announces a duration one hour and fifty-nine minutes ! The fact remains that for 4 years, all the films have exceeded two hours, sometimes cheerfully: avengers endgame do 3:01, Captain America Civil War 2h27, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness 2:06, and Spider-Man No Way Home 2:28. However, with the exception of Thor: Ragnarokwhich is 2:10, all Thor movies have been between 1:52 and 1:54.

The length of films: a deterrent effect?

We would therefore remain within the norm of this series of films, but for the first time in four years, we should be out early of the room. We have no more just waiting for confirmation from Disney and Marvel, after which we will be fixed. To bounce back on the subject, let’s mention the fact that for several years now, many moviegoers complain about the lengthening of most big blockbustersand that this causes filling, affecting the rhythm of the projected film.

According to Yannick Mouren, academic and author of books on cinema, who works at the CNC’s film classification commission, it is a basic trendand more than half of viewers would inquire about the length of a film before going to see him, a trend that has increased with the pandemic. The reasons behind this overall stretch remain unclear, but the idea is that a good movie will be good no matter how long it is.
