Amazon Prime Video isn’t the only studio taking an interest in Middle-earth! A film from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation is planned for 2024 and will also take place before the events of Lord of the Rings. Let’s go to Rohan…

The Rohirrim War

After the Rings of Power series, and games like Gollum or Return to Moria, another meeting in Middle-earth awaits us. This time in the plains of Rohan, where the animated film The War of the Rohirrim will take us. The story takes place 183 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy and centers around the character of Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan from Tolkien’s Appendices. The House of Hammerhand and his kingdom are threatened by an invasion from Wulf, a lord seeking revenge for his father’s death who has sworn their total destruction. Helm, aided by his daughter Hera, must lead his people to a final stand in the ancient fortress of Hornburg…the one we know today as Helm’s Deep.

The cast of Rohan is revealed

The film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell series) and produced by none other than Philippa Boyens, member of the trio behind the famous Lord of the Rings trilogy. The screenplay, inspired by the works of JRR Tolkien, is signed Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews, who worked on the Dark Crystal series. The creative team also includes illustrators Alan Lee and John Howewell known for their work on Middle-earth, and Richard Taylordirector of the Weta Workshop company, to whom we owe the costumes, sets and special effects of the Peter Jackson trilogy.

The voice casting for the original version is also well advanced. Miranda Otto (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Anabelle 2) reprises her role as Éowyn, seen in Lord of the Rings, as the film’s narrator. Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) lends her voice to Hera, the daughter of Helm Hammerhand, whose voice will be that of Brian Cox (RED, Estate). Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) will play Wulf. The rest of the roles have not yet been revealed, but the cast is known, including Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Shaun Dooley (The Witcher) and Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious).

The animation of the film is currently still in progress. The release of The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim in French cinemas is scheduled for April 10, 2024.
