Por a woman of her generation, Elizabeth II is very attentive to the visual, to the symbolism of the function and to the projection of her sovereign authority. The Queen has always been aware that her representation forges the public image of the monarchical institution. “I must be seen to be believed”: with this maxim, the most famous, the sovereign provided one of the keys to the success of her reign: to show herself in public to maintain the confidence of her people.
The “Royal Portraits*” exhibition, at Sotheby’s, is to pay tribute to the sovereigns of England as part of the celebration, at the beginning of June, of the platinum jubilee of Elizabeth II. The event makes it possible to measure the importance of the portraits and official photos of a romantic head of state who fascinates the whole world.
