Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, a DLC equivalent to the entire base game

Maja Moldenhauerdirector, executive producer and artist of StudioMHDR responds to IGN in a interview about the new DLC Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course.

A DLC that has as many animated images as the entire base game

Maja Moldenhauer explains to IGN that the animation volume created by studio artists for this DLC is absolutely considerable. The goal for the development team was to bring to life everything that was left out in the original gamein particular by allowing players to play with Miss Chalice, but also through these animations. In particular, the director explains that the number of animation frames prepared by studio artists for this DLC is comparable to the number of animated frames of the original game in general.

We really wanted to experiment with this art form… I don’t have an inventory or an animated frame count yet, but this DLC is comparable to the entire base game. (…) With the additional animation images, we moved away from this more basic style, the style of Disney of the early 30s, towards Fantasia. I’m saying that basically it’s not at all close to the quality of Fantasia, but that’s what we aim for, something we aspire to.

A DLC with originally modest ambitions, but which quickly grew

Originally, Maja Moldenhauer says that the idea behind this DLC was less ambitious : it had to be only a DLC allowing to play Miss Chalice facing “five oversized bosses. But quickly, other ideas were added in the development team, leading to a Much more ambitious DLC. She even announces a specific idea that she doesn’t want to mention because “she will be a surprise to everyone“.

One of the things we’re known for is boss transformations, in the base game. One thing we did this time around was location transformations. In the Mortimer Freeze boss fight you’ll see, he’s not in the same arena the whole fight. Each phase takes you to a new location, which means way more watercolor backdrops.

The music is made to stick to the bosses

StudioMHDR gave a lot of freedom to its animators for this DLC. The boss designs are modified from the original game, and this is partly due to the change in the development process at the base. But the animators are not the only artists who have been allowed a lot of freedom. Indeed, in the basic game, the composer Kris Maddigan was tasked with composing a whole bunch of different music, which was then glued to bosses that they were consistent with. Moldenhauer describes it as a disorganized process, but still worked. This time it’s the exact opposite which took place :

We had the bosses sealed in our heads. We knew exactly what pace they were going, if they were very energetic, what the theme was. Then we debriefed Kris Maddigan on those levels and bosses and said, “Now go. » As a result, the tracks are tailor-made and specific… we went all out. The original game’s soundtrack had 65 musicians. This one has 110. It was really just to help put things into perspective and scale it compared to the base game.
