Germany will impose social restrictions on unvaccinated people in regions where the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 exceeds an alert threshold, Angela Merkel announced Thursday.

During a press conference, the German Chancellor said that Germany was facing a serious situation due to the new epidemic wave hitting the country head-on.

She added that the federal government was considering a request from the Länder to oblige nursing staff get vaccinated against COVID. A decision that the government had refused to take since the start of the pandemic.

The so-called “2G” rule, which only allows the vaccinated and cured to access public places such as restaurants or concert halls will be applied. The alert threshold is set at 3 hospitalizations of Covid patients per 100,000 inhabitants, said the Chancellor, which is the case in most regions of the country.

For several days, Germany has been in a “dramatic” situation. 50,196 cases were identified in a single day, last Wednesday, across the Rhine. A figure never crossed since the start of the pandemic.
