During the summer of 2022, two major fantasy series will face each other: House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings. The author of the prequel to Games of Thrones as well as the original saga does not hesitate to fan the flames of a “healthy” rivalry.

A duel at the top

Interviewed for the occasion by the British website The Independent, George RR Martin shed light on the future rivalry of the two series. If the writer has nothing personal against the work of JR Tolkien, he would like his creation to be the one at the top.

If they win six Emmys, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven. – George RR Martin

He then adds that he would like to see more science fiction and fantasy series because he loves it. That’s not the only thing George RR Martin highlighted. It also mentions the copyright issue of JRR Tokien’s work. Indeed, Amazon did not buy the rights to the main books, only those of the author. He would therefore like to know what direction this new adaptation will take.

It’s a weird deal, Amazon bought the rights to Tolkien, but not the rights to his books. They don’t have the rights of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, nor The Silmarillion (…) but they have those of the Appendices. – George RR Martin
