Sf the situation is tense in Ukraine, France is not calling, unlike others, to leave the country. Among the countries that have already advised their nationals to leave Ukraine include the United States, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Canada, Norway, Estonia, Lithuania, Australia, Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates.
The French ambassador, Étienne de Poncins, does not make “a general recommendation at this stage”. In a message reported by our colleagues from BFMTV, he explains that he is “continuously monitoring the evolution of the situation”, and believes that the concern “remains at a high, even very high level”. “The days that pass still do not see the expected de-escalation that our authorities are working tirelessly on,” he continues.
Precautions to take
The embassy therefore advises French nationals present in Ukraine to take certain precautions. She calls for “reinforced vigilance throughout the country” and to always have up-to-date identity papers with you. “For all practical purposes”, the ambassador also advises the French on the spot to stock up on water, food, warm clothes and fuel, “even to be able to have some additional reserves”. The French high school in Kiev will also anticipate its closure to allow families to go on vacation in advance.
