Game news Mega Drive Mini 2: SEGA intended to release other consoles but…

On June 3, in parallel with its 62nd birthday, SEGA revealed the existence of the Mega Drive Mini 2! Taking up the design of the second model of the eponymous console, this miniature machine will carry more than 50 games (which will be revealed little by little), but also and above all titles from the Mega CD toy library. Expected for October 27, 2022 at a price of 10,978 yen (about 80 euros), the Mega Drive Mini 2 was not the only console targeted by SEGA.

After the release of the first Mega Drive Mini, SEGA did not remain insensitive to calls from the brand’s fans. The Saturn and the Dreamcast Mini, it’s not for now

Yosuke Okunari did not try to escape. During the live presentation of the Mega Drive Mini 2, the man who was at all the strategic meetings of the Saturn and the Dreamcast, explained that SEGA considered the design of miniaturized models of these machines. The problem is that such consoles require much more power than the Mega Drive Mini 2 – which has 16 times more memory than the first version. With the rise in post-Covid production costs and the shortage of semiconductors, embarking on such a challenge was simply impossible. Some will consider that this speech is out of step with the quality of current Saturn and Dreamcast emulators, but that is to forget that everything must be part of a very complex manufacturing process. Clearly, to be able to take advantage of a Saturn and/or a Dreamcast Mini, you will have to wait for the costs to drop seriously before SEGA tries the experience.

Maybe someday…
