ONYK Gives The Moped An Electric Upgrade

ONYX Motorbikes Take On The Moped

San Francisco based start-up, ONYX motorbikes, is looking to shake up city life with its stylish electric moped. ONYX motorbikes has strapped on a battery and electrified two different motorcycle designs that are sure to turn heads.

One of these models, called the “RCR” or “Café Blaster”, will feature 72 volts of instant torque from its battery. This bike will be able to accelerate from 0-30 mph in just four seconds. Electric vehicles definitely have an inherit advantage in the acceleration department!

The bike highlights don’t stop there. The RCR bike will reach a top speed of up to 60 mph and a range of 75 miles. If these specs pan out to be accurate – this bike will one of the best performing electric bikes on the market.

The second model, the ‘CITY’ or ‘the free spirit’ motorbike will feature an acceleration of 0-15 mph in 5.4 seconds. The CITY bike will reach a top speed just over 30 mph with a range of up to 40 miles. This package looks to be the entry-level offer as ONYX motorbikes gears up to enter the market.

The San Francisco company seems to have an honorable aim of offering an affordable motorbike that doesn’t compromise style or performance. The RCR model will cost $3,500 USD. While the CITY model will cost $2,500 USD.

Production of these motorbikes is expected to begin this summer, with the first batch of orders going out sometime in the fall of 2018. The startup launched a crowd-funding campaign this summer to help fund its first production run. The campaign has already surpassed its goal of raising $250,000 USD.

They say, “everything that glitters is not gold”. And that is certainly the case with many crowd-funded concepts like these. Projects on Kickstarter and Indiegogo sometimes never get shipped or are dead on arrival. I know because I have been a victim to one of these projects. With this one, we hope that’s not that case. As the ideas does show lots of promise. Time will tell, so back it at your own risk!
