Most of us have grown up in town built around the automobile. Since the 20th century the automobile has been heralded as the end all be all of personal transportation. People adopted the car as the primary means of transport to get to work, to school, trips to the grocery store, and everything in between.
While today over 1 billion automobiles are in use, society is showing signs its reconsidering using the automobile as the staple of everyday transportation.
Much has been said about the amount of pollution caused by our petrol-fueled vehicles. While pollution is a serious problem, it’s not an everyday obstacle for most people. Traffic on the other hand is a huge pain in the ass we can all relate too. The sheer scale of the traffic problem faced in major cities is enough for people to consider abandoning their cars all together.
For these reason you find more and more people turning to alternative means of transportation to save them from the mess that is rush hour.
The rise of electric vehicles is providing people tangible solutions to beat the traffic and save the planet while doing so. Advancements in EV technology is not only transforming the way we think about cars but also bikes, scooters, and even planes.
One of the more “fun” looking development in this regard is the entire category of electric off-road motorbikes. Swedish company, CAKE, is looking to enter this market with its well-designed and snappy electric dirt bike.
At first glance you will notice the team at CAKE designed a vehicle that is easy on the eyes. It’s electric dirt bike, called the model KALK, looks like something straight out the future.
But most importantly the bike looks like it’s a blast to ride. Electric bikes have a few inherit advantages to traditional combustion engine motorbikes. As the CAKE team explains, electric bikes are super lightweight compared to combustion engine bikes. This makes for much more lively rides.
Electric bikes are also silent. This feature makes for less obnoxious riding.
“The fact that it’s nearly silent, boosts the riding experience and serves for absolute presence whilst out exploring. It is also enhancing the level of respect towards the surroundings and those sharing the space with you, whether it’d be fellow hikers, wild animals or maybe even your neighbors when riding your back yard track.”
But the real selling points of these bikes are its cleanliness and simplicity. Obviously being electric, this dirt bike produces zero emissions. Connecting to an outlet charges the bike. CAKE takes its focus on zero-emissions one step further by offering renewable/solar energy packages to help power their vehicles sustainably.
Then lastly but certainly not least, there is the simplicity of operation and maintenance that comes with riding an electric bike. Compared to a combustion engine, there are very few moving parts. This greatly simplifies repairs and overall maintenance of the vehicle. Then the actual riding is a breeze. The hassle of clutching and changing gears doesn’t exist with electric vehicles. Throttling and braking is all there is to it.
Pre-orders of the KALK bikes are currently sold out. So you will have to wait some time before you can get your hands on one of these bad boys. While these bikes aren’t exactly street legal, they are a few minor modifications away from having you breeze through Monday evening rush hour in style.
